In 1904, the United States eager to show off its new colony and its status as an empire, transported some 1200 native inhabitants from the various Philippine communities to be exhibited as ‘living specimens’ and as proof of evolutionary progress produced by American colonization. Some stayed behind. Others were continued to be exhibited by novelty impresarios up until 1913.
