Charmaine Clamor's 'jazzipino' →
I have been following the career of this singer who has now come out with three CD’s, one is an English only jazz album, “Searching for the Soul”, another is a mix English and Filipino songs “Flippin’ Out”, and the third an all Filipino harana album. All albums are excellent showcases of vocal talent, a unique timbre and good sense of rhythm. Go to iTunes and...
Bren Bataclan "Smile Project" →
Bataclan is a Filipino artist working out of Boston. His work is reminiscent of the “smiley” character but less generic and more emotive than the typical emoticon. Bataclan ‘gave’ away his work, leaving them in various places and countries with a simple request that the recipient send him feedback and ‘smile’ as often as possible. What a cool concept.

Pinoy version of Liberace? →
In the world of the “good, the bad, and the ugly” of Pinoy musical talents, this one is sooo “bad”. Much to his credit, he’s got gumption though.

In the world of the “good, the bad, and the ugly” Pinoy musical talents, this one is without argument, “the good” if not one of the best.

“Jazzinpino”, the lastest transmutation of Filipino culture (in music). The voice is lovely and jazzy. Although jazz has been adopted by most world cultures, does jazzipino anymore authentic as pinoy hiphop?

Charice Pempengco wows Ellen Degeneres →
15 year-old Filipina performs for Ellen Degeneres. It’s very telling that it took an Ellen Degeneres to recognize the talent of a brown Filipina singer. Apparently, US TV talent scouts are scouring the internet for international performers. I wonder, given the history of mean spiritedness of US TV towards Filipino culture, if sometime later an orientalist example might be shown in another TV...

St. Louis Exposition of 1904 →
In 1904, the United States eager to show off its new colony and its status as an empire, transported some 1200 native inhabitants from the various Philippine communities to be exhibited as ‘living specimens’ and as proof of evolutionary progress produced by American colonization. Some stayed behind. Others were continued to be exhibited by novelty impresarios up until 1913.
